38 and living on the Romney Marsh in Kent, Stephen Brown is married with 3 small and loud children, also having just finished working on the Emergency Ambulances to focus on his Illustration career:
I work digitally in Photoshop and Sketchbook Pro as well as using traditional mediums. From the ability to click and undo mistakes digitally to also making those mistakes during a traditional sketch are all part of the working progress that I love.
Having studied design, fine art, art history and photography at college (many moons ago) I’ve drifted back to it, after working in the health care sector. There was a difficult time just after my first daughter was born 5 years ago, where my wife pushed me back into drawing. This was when I undertook a diploma in children’s illustration and started revisiting the idea of a career in illustration. With a new website built and being signed by an agent last year, which fell on my wedding anniversary, I’ve been freelancing since.
My client list to date spans from Macmillan to Benchmark Education in New York, having just finished a book for Cambridge University Press! Currently I am working on my own Author/Illustrator book as well, as I love to draw everything and anything.
I’m hoping I can continue this work and make it a good career as I adore sitting in my studio sketching. I remember how I felt after reading the Twits for the first time and seeing Quentin Blakes illustrations and how they spoke to me, and would love to have my work have that effect on just one little child one day and maybe spark something inside them to want to draw and create life on a blank page.
